Tom Waits congratulates 'master' Bob Dylan on Nobel Prize win
Tom Waits has sent a congratulatory message to Bob Dylan for winning the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Yesterday (October 13), legendary singer-songwriter Dylan was awarded the coveted prize, credited with having "created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".

Now a note posted to Waits' Twitter account from himself and his wife Kathleen Brennan reads: "Its a great day for Literature and for Bob when a Master of its original form is celebrated. Before epic tales and poems were ever written down, they migrated on the winds of the human voice and no voice is greater than Dylans."

Former Isle Of Wight Festival organiser Ray Foulk said that Dylan's Nobel Prize win was "long overdue".

The Guardian reports that Sara Danils, Secretary of the Swedish Academy, described Dylan as "a great sampler& and for 54 years he has been at it, reinventing himself.

On his classic 'Blonde on Blonde', she said: "An extraordinary example of his brilliant way of rhyming. putting together refrains, and his brilliant way of thinking."

"If you look far back, 5000 years, you discover Homer and Sappho. They wrote poetic texts which were meant to be performed, and its the same way for Bob Dylan. We still read Homer and Sappho, and we enjoy it."

Previous winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature include Alice Munro, Harold Pinter, Doris Lessing, J M Coetzee, Toni Morrison and Seamus Heaney.

Last year's award was given to Belarusian investigative journalist Svetlana Alexievich.

Now we consider what were doing a little more and if thats losing your edge& maybe, I dunno. Presidential debate viral star Ken Bone loves Radiohead
Ken Bone, the US Presidential debate audience member who went viral online, has said that Radiohead are his favourite band.

The second Presidential debate took place last Sunday, with Bone asking Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump about their energy policies. The undecided voter became a hit online, mostly due to his love of red sweaters.

Bone took part in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Thursday (October 13) and was asked who his favourite musicians are. His response: "Radiohead is my all time favourite, nobody blends genres like Thom Yorke and the boys."

Snoop Dogg recently reached out to Bone, offering an invitation for the pair to smoke together. The rapper again reiterated this on Reddit, to which Bone replied: "I'm in LA late next week, maybe we can hook up. Big fan here. My dad wants to roll wit da Dogg big time, you me and him could do some tight stuff."

"That didn't sound cool at all, did it?", he added.

It recently emerged that Ken Bone used to be in a Christian rock band. A former bandmate of Bone, Joshua Burkett, told Mashable that the pair were in a band that played "Christian pop covers from the 90s and 00s".

Burkett described Bone as a pretty good drummer" who "had all the chicks. On Facebook, he added, My ultimate claim to fame in life will be that I was once in a band with the legend Ken Bone and that we spent two summers cruising around our hometown picking up chicks me failing and him succeeding.

Asked if Bone wore a red sweater during gigs, Burkett said: No, but he could rock a Crocodile Dundee hat like no other.

Liam Gallagher calls Noel a 'scary clown' in latest online attack
Liam Gallagher has once again made a dig at brother and former Oasis bandmate Noel Gallagher via social media.

The pair have shared a tense relationship since the Britpop group's 2009 split, with Liam recently hitting out at Noel publicly, calling him a potato, describing him as the "Ronnie Corbett of rock" and comparing his brother's dress sense to that of Gary Barlow.

Now Liam has referenced the killer clown craze in his latest tweet about Noel, writing: "Scary clown buying milk last seen in waitrose Maida Vale call the cops", along with an image of his big brother in a supermarket.

It would be nice for me and [Noel] to get back together as brothers. But its good, the standoff. Im enjoying it. I aint backing down. He aint backing down."

"At least people are still talking about it. Theyre obsessed," he added. "Theres no harm in it. He says shit about me. I say shit about him. I have held the olive branch out, and there has been nothing, so there you go. Potato it is, mate."

Foo Fighters settle lawsuit over gigs cancelled after Paris terror attacks
Foo Fighters' court case against insurance companies over cancelled gigs has been dismissed.

The US band had filed a lawsuit against two companies that were insurers of their 2015 European tour, Lloyds of London and Robertson Taylor. The case had regarded gigs that were cancelled after frontman Dave Grohl broke his leg and after last year's terror attacks in Paris.

Grohl broke a metatarsal onstage at a gig in Gothenburg during June 2015, leading to the cancellation of the band's UK tour and Glastonbury headline appearance. Following the Bataclan attack last November, an additional four European shows were cancelled.

Foo Fighters claimed in the suit that Lloyds failed "to pay amounts that even they recognise are due and owing". They also said that Robertson Taylor failed to warn them that rescheduling their UK shows would affect any insurance claim.

Billboard now reports that Foo Fighters have settled the case.

A court filing dated October 7 ordered a "dismissal with prejudice" of the two-part complaint. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

It has also been reported that the band are barred from re-filing the case on the same claim.

Glastonbury 2017: 'Well sourced information' points to three huge headliners
Reports are suggesting that Radiohead, Daft Punk and The Stone Roses will headline next year's Glastonbury Festival.

Glastonbury Festival 2017 will run from June 21-25. Radiohead are among the favourites to top the Pyramid Stage next year, as are The Stone Roses, Guns N' Roses and Kasabian. Daft Punk have also been rumoured along with Lady Gaga.

Festivals website eFestivals has now released a statement allegedly citing "well-sourced information", suggesting that these will be the three acts to top the Pyramid Stage in 2017.

The statement reads: "eFestivals currently believes that next year Radiohead will be given that opportunity to headline on Saturday. We also strongly believe The Stone Roses are the front runners to top the bill on Sunday, and while we are less certain on the third headlining act, we have had what should be well-sourced information several months ago, that its supposedly Daft Punk topping the bill on the Friday."

It is worth noting that the website has been correct in predicting the Glastonbury headliners in the past, notably reporting early that Metallica and Kasabian would headline in 2014.

NME has asked Glastonbury Festival for a comment on the reports.

Radiohead member Ed O'Brien recently commented on reports that his band would headline next year's Worthy Farm event, saying: "I would love to. I go to Glastonbury every year, its my carnival. To be asked to play at Glastonbury again would be magic. I also think Glastonbury is like our spiritual home. It is the mother of all festivals& theres nothing like that one& It would be great to play there."

Franz Ferdinand unveil new anti-Donald Trump song 'Demagogue'
Franz Ferdinand have unveiled a new song, a blistering attack on Donald Trump. Check out 'Demagogue' below.

The track is part of the '30 Days, 30 Songs' project, in which a new anti-Trump song is unveiled every day in the run up to the US election. Death Cab For Cutie kicked it off with 'Million Dollar Loan', while Aimee Man, Bhi Bhiman and My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James have also contributed.

A damning indictment of the Presidential candidate's policies and alleged behaviour, Franz's lyrics harvest the feeling of manifest doom throughout many liberal US voters: "those pussy-grabbing fingers won't let go of me now",

This is the band's first new material since guitarist Nick McCarthy left Franz Ferdinand earlier this year.

"When we record or tour, it takes a long, full-time commitment lasting a minimum of a year and a half, most of which is spent away from home," said the band in a statement. "Nick has a young family and does not want to be away from them for such a long period."

They added: "This is not necessarily a permanent situation and we will let you know if circumstances change in the future.

"Wed love to be able to say this is a result of personal or musical differences, but its not. Those differences are what we formed the band around in the first place."

The band are currently working on new material, following up 2013's 'Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action' and their 2015 collaboration with Sparks 'FFS'.

Watch the BBC show footage of a gorilla instead of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon
BBC Breakfast accidentally showed footage of a gorilla instead of Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon during a link this morning (October 14).

While informing viewers what would be coming up next on the early-morning magazine show, presenter Naga Munchetty said: "We're going to be joined by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. We'll talk to her about plans for a second referendum on independence."

The show's editors then cut to footage of a gorilla enjoying a snack while sitting against a tree. "I'm sorry," co-presenter Charlie Stayt quickly told viewers. "We've very clearly run the wrong footage over that particular sequence." Watch what happened below.

Cannot stop laughing.#BBC sorry for showing footage of gorilla instead of Nicola #Sturgeon... pic.twitter.com/lj3apEE3lV— Sara Firth (@Sara__Firth) October 14, 2016

The footage of the gorilla related to another story in this week's news. Kumbuka, a 29-stone western lowland silverback, managed to escape from his enclosure at London Zoo yesterday (October 13) before he was tranquilised and safely returned to his pen. London Zoo officials have reassured the public that Kumbuka is a "gentle giant" and only managed to make it as far as the secure keepers' area before he was taken back to his enclosure.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon later appeared on the show live via satellite, and told viewers that she thinks a second Scottish independence is "highly likely" to take place after a majority of the country's voters voted against Brexit.

Netflix will soon allow subscribers to watch content offline, says report
Netflix is planning to make some of its content available to watch online, according to a new report.

Having ruled out the possibility of offline playback in 2014, Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings spoke more encouragingly about offering viewers this option in April, saying the streaming service should "keep an open mind" about it.

Now industry insider Dan Taitz, a senior figure at Penthera, a company that specialises in software which enables video content to be downloaded to smartphones, has told Light Reading that Netflix has revised its opinion on offline playback.

"We know from our sources within the industry that Netflix is going to launch this product," he said. "My expectation is that by the end of the year Netflix will be launching download-to-go as an option for their customers."

Another industry expert pointed out that, depending on its various licensing agreements with TV networks and film studios, Netflix may not be able to make all content available offline. However, original series such as Stranger Things and Orange Is The New Black should be safe bets for the rumoured download-to-go service.

A Netflix representative said coyly in response to the report: "While our focus remains on delivering a great streaming experience, we are always exploring ways to make the service better. We don't have anything to add at this time."

JK Rowling defends decision to adapt Fantastic Beasts novella into five movies
JK Rowling has defended the decision to adapt her Harry Potter spin-off book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as five movies.

Yesterday, the author announced that the 2001 novel, intended as a supplementary manual to accompany her Harry Potter franchise, will be turned into a five-part film series in a Facebook livestream.

"We were doing some script sessions the other day, and I can tell you that we always knew it was going to be more than one movie," she said. "We said a trilogy as a kind of placeholder, but I've now done the plotting properly and we're pretty sure it's going to be five movies."

Following the announcement, Rowling was questioned on Twitter about whether the 128 page book contains enough material to justified the extended screen time.

"Five movies? Don't you think it's too much? You have too much to say with only one book? asked one user.

I think, when you realise what story we're *really* telling, you'll understand that it can't possibly fit in one movie! https://t.co/xV5vYwCDdr— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) October 13, 2016

Rowling replied: "I think, when you realise what story we're *really* telling, you'll understand that it can't possibly fit in one movie!"

Responding to another user questioning whether the franchise will stop with five, she wrote: Theres a natural arc to five. Youll see.

Fantastic Beasts is set 70 years before the Harry Potter saga begins. It focuses on Newt Scamander, the author of one of Harry's Hogwarts text books, and his adventures in New York City.

Rowling hinted that the films will include connections to the plot of her Harry Potter novels.

"This is new material. There are ways in which we connect to the Potter books that I think people will find surprising," Rowling said.

"You're learning a part of magical history that's talked about in the Potter books that you never see. I'm getting a chance to tell that now."

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits cinemas worldwide on November 18.

Australia's 9 News reports that Iero was involved in a crash between a bus and his tour van. The report states that Iero has "escaped injury but two other men had to be taken to hospital". It adds: "One of the men was airlifted to St Vincents Hospital, the other was taken by road. They are both reported to be serious but stable."

Sharing a statement on Twitter, MCR wrote: "Frank Iero's band, Frank Iero And The Patience, were unloading their van in Sydney, Australia when they were hit by a bus. 2 members of the band are undergoing surgery. Frank is banged up pretty badly but is physically OK."

They added: "We are sending out our love and wishes for a speedy recovery to his band mates, and to Frank, and we thank all of you for your kind wishes."

Watch Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder perform at Prince tribute
Prince was honoured with a tribute concert lasting almost five hours in his homestate of Minnesota yesterday evening.

The gig, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, featured a cast of 15 performers including Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Tori Kelly and more.

As Minnesotas Star Tribune points out, the concert was slightly lacking in star power due to a number of musicians dropping out at the last minute. Christina Aguilera was forced to cancel due to a sore throat; John Mayor backed out due to recording obligations; and Anita Baker was a no-show due to injury.

The show, however, went on and featured a few performances befitting of the Purple One.

Bring Me The Horizon announce release of Royal Albert Hall performance live album
Bring Me The Horizon have announced the release of a live album featuring a recording of their performance at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year.

A recording of their performance will be released on CD and DVD on December 2. Proceeds from sales of the album will be donated to Teenage Cancer Trust.

Bring Me The Horizon released their fifth album, 'That's The Spirit', in September last year.

Little Mix singer says Honey G is an actress
Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson has cast further doubts on the authenticity of controversial X Factor finalist Honey G.

The 35-year-old rapper from Harrow in North-West London - or "North Weezy" as she calls it - has been the major talking point of this year's series. Some viewers believe she is a serious rapper with rather unusual technique, whereas others think her act is a potentially problematic parody of hip-hop culture. The Guardian's Lola Okolosie recently branded her performance on the show modern-day blackface".

Last weekend, judge Simon Cowell responded to Honey G's performance of Tupac's 'California Love' by saying: "I thought you weren't serious when you first came in. But now I realise that you are."

However, Nelson - whose group won the show in 2011 - is less convinced. "She's just no. I think she's an actress, I've been told she is as well," she said on KISS FM this morning, according to Daily Star.

"I don't think it's fair that novelty acts get through," Nelson continued. "I get it in that it becomes a little niche thing and everyone finds it funny, but I just think it's so unfair when so many incredible people don't get through."

Honey G - whose day job is running her own recruitment company - will no doubt cause more controversy on The X Factor tomorrow night (October 15) when she performs a cover of Notorious BIG's 'Mo Money Mo Problems'.

Noel Gallagher on Oasis's 'Be Here Now': 'We should never have made that album when we did'
Noel Gallagher has shared a new video interview in which he looks back on the making of Oasis's 1997 album 'Be Here Now'.

During the 30-minute interview posted on Oasis's Vevo channel, Gallagher says that he wishes the band had waited longer to record their follow-up to 1995's enormously successful '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?'.

"I only say this now, looking back on it after 20 years.... we should never have made that record then," he admits. "'Cause we came off the back of that American tour which was, again, the third tour in a row that we never completed. And I came back to the airport and the fucking world's press was there and instead of going, 'Right, we should just go our separate ways for a year or two,' we decided like idiots to go straight into the studio."

Gallagher continued: "That maybe wasn't the best idea, you know what I mean? 'Cause 'Morning Glory' hadn't really run its course then. It was probably still Number One in England it was definitely still Top Five in the States. And yet, there we were, going into the studio, effectively trying to to make another album to kill it, which was ridiculous."

Admitting that the band could have benefited from some external advice at the time, Gallagher said: "I often think, looking back, the people around us who were in the music business for 20 years before we got there should really have said something."

The band's remastered reissue of 'Be Here Now' is out today and streaming now. Watch Gallagher discuss the album below.

When asked by NME if the band had 'lost their edge', frontman Caleb Followill replied: "If there was a movie made of our lives, in the last few years we had a lot of edge. Those are the moments in the movie that you'd wanna watch!"

They continued: "What we were doing early on was storybook, classic, what a band should be; the drugs and the booze and the girls. Now we consider what were doing a little more and if thats losing your edge& maybe, I dunno. When you look at the bands that still had their edge, most of them, their music is shit so it doesnt fucking matter about the edge.

Bob Dylan has enjoyed a huge streaming boost since his Nobel Prize win
Bob Dylan's Spotify streams have increased by more than 500% since he won the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature.

On Wednesday (October 13), the legendary singer-songwriter became the first ever musician to receive the coveted annual prize, credited with having "created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". The award is given to an individual who has produced "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction".

Billboard reports that total streams of his songs on Spotify have since risen by a massive 512%. Streams of his most popular song on the service, 'Like A Rolling Stone', have increased by 258%.

Meanwhile, Isle Of Wight Festival organiser Ray Foulk has said that Dylan's Nobel Prize win was "long overdue".

The Guardian reports that Sara Danils, Secretary of Sweden's Nobal Academy, described Dylan as "a great sampler& and for 54 years he has been at it, reinventing himself".

On his classic 'Blonde On Blonde', she said: "An extraordinary example of his brilliant way of rhyming, putting together refrains, and his brilliant way of thinking."

"If you look far back, 5,000 years, you discover Homer and Sappho. They wrote poetic texts which were meant to be performed, and it's the same way for Bob Dylan. We still read Homer and Sappho, and we enjoy it."

Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' rating and running time revealed
Marvel's Doctor Strange has been given a 12A rating in the UK.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) awarded the certificate for "moderate fantasy violence" and "injury detail".

The BBFC's rating also reveals that the film has an approved running time of 114m 49s and offers a brief plot teaser: "Doctor Strange is a superhero fantasy action film about a surgeon who turns to mystical forces after losing the use of his hands in an accident."

The sub-two hour running time makes Doctor Strange Marvel's second shortest movie ever, with only Thor: The Dark World telling a more concise story.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Doctor Strange, joined by Tilda Swinton as the "Ancient One", a mystical character who serves as his mentor, and a strong supporting cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams. In the Doctor Strange comic books, the Ancient One has always been Tibetan, which has led to accusations of "whitewashing" since it was announced last year that the white actress had been cast in the role.

Swinton responded to the controversy by saying in April: "Well, it's not actually an Asian character - that's what I need to tell you about it. I wasn't asked to play an Asian character, you can be very well assured of that."

Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil) directs from a script by John Spaihts (Prometheus). Doctor Strange opens in UK cinemas on October 25 before getting a US release on November 4.

Leonard Cohen clarifies his recent "ready to die" comments
Leonard Cohen has clarified his widely-reported comments about feeling "ready to die".

Discussing his archive of unfinished songs during a recent interview with the New Yorker, the legendary singer-songwriter said: "I don't think I'll be able to finish those songs. Maybe, who knows? And maybe I'll get a second wind, I don't know. But I don't dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy. I don't dare do that."

"I've got some work to do," 82-year-old Cohen continued. "Take care of business. I am ready to die. I hope it's not too uncomfortable. That's about it for me."

However, at a playback event in Los Angeles yesterday (October 13), Cohen said he had made these comments hastily. "Uh, I said I was ready to die recently, and I think I was exaggerating," Billboard quotes him as saying. "I've always been into self-dramatisation. I intend to live forever."

At the end of the playback, Cohen added: "Thanks for coming, friends. I really appreciate your standing up when I came into the room. I hope we can do this again. I intend to stick around until 120."

Cohen is preparing to release his 14th album, 'You Want It Darker', on October 21. It will be the iconic artist's third LP in six years, having not released a record for eight years prior to that.

The album's title track was previewed earlier this year on Peaky Blinders and is now available to stream in full online - listen below.

Two new 'Stranger Things' characters revealed
Two new additions to the Stranger Things cast have been revealed.

Netflix recently confirmed that it has renewed Stranger Things for a second season. Season two will feature nine episodes, one more than the first, launching on Netflix at a date in 2017 which has yet to be announced.

Creators the Duffer Brothers have already said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that season two will introduce four new characters and "venture a little bit outside of Hawkins" as well as exploring more of The Upside Down.

Now The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled two of these new characters. Australian actor Dacre Montgomery, soon to be seen in the Power Rangers reboot movie, will play Max's older step-brother, Billy. His character is said to be "a classic girlfriend-stealing bad boy".

Meanwhile, child actress Sadie Sink - who has previously guested in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmit - will play Max, who is described as "a tomboy with a complicated history and a suspicious streak".

In addition, two of season one's recurring characters, Joe Keery's Steve and Noah Schnapp's Will Byers, have been upgraded to series regulars for season two.

"We'll be doing more than just a rehash of season one," the show's executive producer Dan Cohen said recently. "We're coming back with a few new characters, expanding storylines and mythologies, so it'll feel like the stakes are raised and more is going on and really delivering on the promise and pushing for more."
