Well, the 2nd annual Atlanta Comics Expo has come and gone and I'm still alive. I was a busy woman during the con, speaking on several panels, entering various costume contests and hanging out with some great people. This is a fairly long entry so I've broken it up into several bite-sized pieces...
The con started on Friday at 1:00 with me (far right), allison_smiley (middle below) and another costumer, Pam, leading a panel called "But I can't sew!". It was a very small crowd for this one being the first panel and it still being Friday and all. Here we are showing a young lady how to thread a sewing machine. I'm over there sewing itty ittty itty bitty superhero capes for some trophies.
Later that day, the three of us again did a costume panel, this time called "It's in the details" which appropriately enough is about detailing costumes. Who'da thunk?
I skipped out on the Zombie Luau because I hadn't seen my husband all week and also because I needed to get my WoW on. :P </div> Saturday was pretty relaxed, fortunately. Our first panel wasn't until 4pm but I wanted to be there early to see the lovely Christina do her panel on the art of corsetry. "The ties that bind". I'm going to stalk that girl until she does a class for us on drafting from measurements. ;) Woot.
After our panel, called on entering costume contests, we actually gave a costume contest. I was supposed to wrangle folks for the costume track but since the con is still a baby, I was asked to enter my costume just to add numbers and eye candy. I was a little nervous about entering because if I happened to win, I wouldn't be able to compete at novice anymore but would have to move to journeyman. As I just don't feel that my work is ready for that, I was relieved when three (really awesome I might add) comic book costumes won. It was a comic book victory!
I don't have any pictures of my costume from ACE so here's a picture of the same costume at DragonCon last year. Only difference was that I didn't wear my wig since I have to reset it into that style. So, pretend this picture came from this weekend...
</div> Sunday was last day of con and an early morning (10am) contest for us. Several of our guild members (The SouthEastern Costumer's Society -aka- SECS Fiends) had been asked to compete in the "Iron Costumer" competition. If you've ever seen "Iron Chef" you have the general idea of how this goes. We flipped a coin against the other team (Team Terror - from Psycho Shak Haunted House) and won the right to costume the Hero while they costumed the Villian.
A theme was chosen at random from submissions by con-goers over the weekend. The winning theme was "Space Pirates"!!! Also, they revealed the "secret ingredient" to us which turned out to be a roll of "Blaze Orange" Duck Tape. We were so thrilled that it was duck tape that we jumped up and down. :)
We then had 60 minutes to construct our costume based on the theme and using at least 50% materials that were provided for the contest. Everything else we used could come from what we brought. So, 60 minutes later, the live costuming battle was over and the winner was.....
TEAM HEMMING NINJAS!!!
Team Hemming Ninjas prepare for battle! (Yours truly on the far right...and NO, allison_smiley is NOT naked in this picture. She's wearing a nude bodysuit for construction purposes. ;))
The winning contest entry - Captain Blaze Orange!!! Hoorah!!
Captain Blaze Orange and Team Hemming Ninjas.
All in all, it was a fun con experience, even if I spent the majority of the con behind a table or my sewing machine. I feel highly motivated to move on the costume list for DragonCon now, so keep an eye on this blog for updates on the 7 costumes of death!</div>
