Books: I’m currently in the middle of reading Snowed In, a m/m romance anthology from Torquere Press, which, uh, folded last year, so the anthology is no longer available. Oops. And I am also three-quarters of the way through The Proposal by Mary Balogh, Book 1 of the Survivors Club series, about which more below.
Books Finished: The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness This was delightful (and also A+ book cover design - it glows in the dark, which I was not expecting, so reading a chunk of it at bedtime and then shutting off the light to discover the book on my nightstand GLOWING WITH AN UNCANNY LIGHT was a truly beautiful moment). It’s a story about being one of the teens not involved in the paranormal drama going down at your high school - and it’s also a really fascinating portrayal of anxiety/OCD (in the narrator) and a variety of other challenging mental health issues in his family members, and the awkward process of breaking away from your family and growing up and figuring yourself out when you think you’re the least wanted, least interesting, least important person in any given group.
Only a Promise by Mary Balogh (Survivors Club #5) I found this one while randomly browsing the romance shelves at my new public library (getting a library card was, obviously, one of the first things I did after arriving) which is why I read it out of order; it’s the kind of series where that doesn’t matter too much.
The eponymous survivors are a group of men variously traumatized by the Napoleonic Wars, plus one woman also traumatized by being captured along wiht her husband and seeing him tortured and killed. The books are all set years after the survivors met each other at the estate of a sympathetic duke in Cornwall; now they have all recovered, more or less, and embarked upon the process of getting back to their lives. Only a Promise concerns Ralph, who has a facial scar and a heaping helping of survivor’s guilt as the only one of his school friends to come back alive. He also has a ducal title to pass on, so he winds up in a marriage of convenience with Chloe, who has suffered a series of disgraces since her debut in Society (and then, YOU WILL NEVER GUESS!!! they FALL IN LOVE EVEN THOUGH THEY TOTALLY SAID THEY WOULDN’T!!!!)
Fic: I’ve got 13 WIPs bookmarked, so I’m following at least that many--If They Haven’t Learned Your Name (!!!!!) updated last night (!!!!!) and Whip Crack updated today, so it is a good time for WIPs right now!
Fic finished: (A sampling of stuff I’ve bookmarked recently--you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/b
swallows still sing by @icoulddothisallday (Bucky & Steve pre-slash, M, 48k) - Bucky is a German Jew experimented on by Zola at Dachau, and when the Howling Commandos liberate the camp they take special responsibility for Zola’s prisoners. The story is gorgeous and thoughtful and more hopeful than not, but also is an absolutely gutting look at the unspeakable loss and dehumanization suffered by victims of the Holocaust; I managed to hold it together for the early parts and then cried all the way through the last three chapters, but, you know, consider your tolerance for this storyline. (Also it looks like the author is planning on a sequel? *hopeful look*)
~WILD SHIFT IN TONE~
Dudeliet and His Bromeo by @hugealienpie (Derek/Stiles & Bitty/Jack, T, 31k) - Stiles plays lacrosse and Bitty plays hockey and both of them think the feud between their teams is a bit silly, so they circumvent it. Also, you know how I wrote a story about Jack having a back tattoo because my feelings about him and my feelings about Derek Hale are like right next to each other? IMAGINE INSTEAD THAT JACK AND DEREK GET TO BE FRIENDS. !!!!!! Also what if Shitty likes to be naked all the time because he is a werewolf? :D (Oh hey, it looks like THIS author is ALSO planning a sequel?? *hopeful look multiplies*)
This Is the Ghost Story by @taste-is-sweet (Bucky/Steve, T, 45k) - This is part 17 of a series but the first 16 stories are all pretty short and, uh, I have not actually read them yet, so I think you can read this one fine without them as long as you are prepared for the fact that Bucky knows Rodney McKay and Ancient Technology/alien macguffins are a fact of his life from more than just the usual Asgardian directions. THE POINT IS: Bucky gets amnesia, AGAIN, but since the Winter Soldier ALWAYS has amnesia he doesn’t think to tell anyone for a while. OHAI BUCKY-THINKS-STEVE-IS-THE-NICEST-HANDLER KINK, NICE TO SEE YOU. :D
