A bit of research suggests it's a 'Birch Polypore'. They are tough, leathery and bitter - So not a late night snack on toast.
Good when dried, the top is good for sharpening razors and knives for which it is also called the 'Razorstrop fungus'.
Good too as tinder for lighting camp fires. If you've cut yourself out in the wilderness, find one and cut it in a strip to make a a plaster!
