Weekly Treat of Cat Memes for Feline Fanatics (October 18, 2023)

A lot of change has happened on the internet over the past couple of decades, but one of the few things that has remained the same is that cats rule the internet. No matter how you feel about them as pets, you have no choice but to respect the versatility and influence that they bring to the table in memes.

A cat meme from 2007 is a world away from a cat meme today, but there is at least one thing that they both share: a deep reverence for the inherent goofiness of our feline friends. This is something that us humans have appreciated for thousands of years, and it's unlikely that we're going to stop any time soon.

As any cat lover will tell you, these critters are endlessly entertaining in real life. This makes the fact that they translate so well to funny internet pictures merely an added blessing.

The Cringiest Dating App Encounters This Week (October 18, 2023)

The human race are masochists. Deep down, we realize that love is vital to the wellbeing of each and every one of us, then we make it ridiculously complicated and difficult to obtain. While there are many types of affection that we can give and receive, it can't be denied that the romantic kind is very important to a lot of people. That doesn't make achieving it any easier, though.

In theory, this is where dating apps step in. When a real life meet cute seems like a faint possibility, there's a whole market of potential partners on the internet to peruse instead. Sadly, not all of them are capable of acting anything other than unhinged. Online dating has never had worse PR, and most of it is because of the way it makes a lot of people act. At least it allows singletons to filter out the weirdos at an early stage.

The Best Gaming Memes of the Week (October 18, 2023)

As a kid, I really took my free time for granted. I know it's easy to say that in hindsight, but I think about this every time I try and sit down for a gaming session. As an adult with multiple jobs, rent, bills, and a relationship, even the prospect of starting a game (let alone finishing one) feels absurd. Elden Ring, for example, isn't exactly a game you can casually dip in and out of here and there. But boy oh boy did I try. Every day after work I would fire up Elden Ring, die about one hundred times in the span of an hour, and then start making dinner and prepping for the next day. Playing Elden Ring this way felt like a Sisyphean nightmare. Much like many open world titles that come out these days, Elden Ring is a game that lends itself to being binged, and few adults have that kind of free time. Maybe some day, if I ever get to retire, I'll be the gamer I've always dreamed of being. Until then, at least there's gaming memes!

The Cringiest Parenting Texts of the Week (October 17, 2023)

As I've combed through the cringiest parenting texts on the internet, I've noticed some patterns emerging. One of them is that many of these texts are between adult children who still live with their parents and said parents. I say this in no way to shame people who live with their parents because of financial or personal reasons, but sometimes your relationship with your family improves when you no longer live together. When your parents are able to see you as an adult instead of a fully grown teenager eating their food and mooching off their water bill, they start to treat you as such. I don't say this to blame adult children whose parents treat them like they are still 16. Many parents will do that whether their kids live with them or not! I just hope that everyone who is dealing with insane parents is able to help themselves through it as much as they can. Moving out isn't always the worst first step.

Pasta Memes For National Pasta Day (October 17, 2023)

It's National Pasta Day, and I intend to celebrate. Pasta was one of the first foods I ever learned to cook with heat and water (I don't count frozen waffles as "learning to cook"), and I continue to enjoy it to this day. The trickiest thing about this food group is knowing when enough is enough. I always make way too much pasta, and that's not necessarily a bad thing! There's a little thing called "meal prepping," and many accomplished healthy people do it often. The problem is figuring out when I should stop eating the spaghetti or rigatoni or whatever. There's nothing worse than eating too much pasta and feeling sick to your stomach after devouring what should've been a 10/10 meal. On this National Pasta Day, I vow only to eat one and a half bowls of pasta and save the rest for the non-National Pasta Days ahead of me.

Tolkien Tuesday: The Best Lord of the Rings Memes This Week (October 17, 2023)

Did you know that the role of Gandalf was offered to Sean Connery and Anthony Hopkins? In an interview with The Independent, executive producer Mark Ordesky said, 'we did make an offer to Connery but he said no. We never got an answer until years later, but apparently he read the material and just didn't get it.' Not only that, but Queen of the Damned actor Stuart Townsend was originally suppose to play Aragorn, but the actor was fired by Peter Jackson just one day before filming. It's hard to imagine a version of Lord of the Rings without Ian McKellen as Gandalf or Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, but who could have predicted just how iconic Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy would become years later?

If you're as much of a LOTR fan as we are, then you'll love this week's pick of hilarious Lord of the Rings memes. Be sure to come back next Tolkien Tuesday for even more nerdy content.

The Funniest Star Trek Memes of the Week (October 17, 2023)

I think the reason that Kirk and Spock work so well as a pair is that they're a classic example of literary foils. For those of you who need a brush up on English class,

"In any narrative, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character, typically, a character who contrasts with the protagonist, in order to better highlight or differentiate certain qualities of the protagonist."

The only reason why Spock is so interesting is that Kirk is so normal. Kirk is a classic 60s heroic protagonist. He follows his intuition, is a classic leader, and is super conventionally attractive. Spock is Kirk's uber-logical subordinate, who is a little funky-looking. He makes interesting and intelligent points that a regular human character wouldn't make. Even though he can come off as cold and emotionless, his relationship with Kirk humanizes him throughout the series. If you love Spock's weirdness and Kirk's normalness, you'll love these hilarious Star Trek memes

Dedicated Dog Owner Shares Noisy Chaos of Living With Three Huskies, Prompts Mixed Reactions on Twit

It's no secret that adopting any kind of dog is a huge commitment, but some are a lot harder to handle than others. Some need more intensive behavioral training to be manageable, and some require a lot of extra grooming. Others have what we might politely call 'strong personalities'.

Others still are a mixture of all of these factors, as with many huskies. Being bred to pull sleds in Arctic conditions doesn't exactly scream perfect suburban pet material, but that doesn't stop many dog lovers from being won over by their cuteness.

Those who adopt can often face some noisy consequences, as with one TikToker who shared a slice of life with her own three huskies. When the video made it to Twitter, viewers were split between being entertained and swearing off ever taking a creature like that into their home. They're definitely not a breed for an inexperienced owner.

Self-Centered Starbucks Customer Gets Roasted for Trauma Dumping About Husband at the Drive Thru

While the experience of working with customers is a varied one, most fall under one of two different categories. First there are those who are respectful, and then there are all the rest who overstep the mark.

There are numerous different ways in which retail and hospitality workers experience audacity from those they serve. Sometimes, what's worse than the rude or ungrateful people are those who overwhelm you by being 'nice'. It's difficult to be annoyed at someone who thinks that they're being kind, but it can often be just as insulting and sometimes straight-up insane.

This was the overwhelming reaction to one woman who posted on TikTok about paying it forward at the Starbucks drive thru. She filmed herself telling the barista that she would pay for the car behind her in remembrance of her deceased husband.

Claiming that she could "feel" that the barista had lost someone too and insisting on getting her on camera, viewers were shocked at the lack of boundaries. Some even suggested that there was evidence that she was lying about some aspects of her situation. Platforming your supposed generosity on social media rarely ends well.

Parent Admits to Daughter-In-Law She Wasnt Invited to Family Outing Because of Her Weight

Everyone wants to be able to call themselves an honest person, but when the truth can hurt relationships and feelings, sometimes it's harder than it seems to be straight up with someone. Redditor u/Mysterious_Prior7438 recently explained to r/amitheasshole that whenever she goes on family outings that include her daughter-in-law, Beth, the whole day inevitably comes to a halt because Beth gets to exhausted to continue. It all came to a head when OP decided to go out with her daughters and purposely exclude Beth. When Beth called OP up asking why she wasn't invited, OP decided to be brutally honest with her, admitting it was because of her weight. Beth was predictably upset, which caused OP to turn to r/amitheasshole.

Was OP unnecessarily insensitive, or just being honest? Redditors weighed in.

'My boyfriend's armpits': 20+ Smelly smells that smell smelly but everyone secretly enjoys

Smells can evoke the strongest memories in the human brain. Weirdly enough, and even though it's a human's weakest sense, a smell can make you have the heaviest flashbacks and the strongest emotional response to something. For example, if you grew up somewhere that gets summer rains but now you live in the desert, you might feel nostalgic when that wet-asphalt smell hits your nose. But what about the weirder smells ? The ones that might actually just be gross. Does anyone really like the smell of body odor, fish food, or a stinky dog ? Maybe they would if it made them relive some kind of wonderful memory.

Scroll onward to read about some of the weirdest hate-to-love smells that we all secretly enjoy. So prepare your nasal cavity for some memory-invoking smelly smells that smell smelly. Next up on the agenda, scroll through some memes that the European mind simply cannot comprehend.

    30 Memes For The Now

It's easy to dawdle on the past. I'm constantly thinking about things that happened years ago, even when it doesn't help my life today. There's nothing wrong with being a reflective person, and I like my introspective nature, but sometimes, I need to be reminded of a quote by a very intelligent woman. It might be a little crass, but I think it gets the point across perfectly.

"If you've got one leg in the past and one leg in the future, you're pissing on today."

I've never been someone who is constantly waiting for the future to come. If I want something to happen for myself, I will do what needs to be done, and I won't wait until "the optimal moment" or anything lame like that. As Kim Petras said, the future starts now, and if you want your future to be fierce, you should enjoy some funny memes right now.

A Sliver of Memes That Exercise Restraint

Much as we love memes here at Memebase, we know that they have their downsides. For example, some of them are annoying, or get used for people to communicate messages that we really don't want to hear.

Perhaps one of their simultaneously best and worst qualities is that they're an enormous time drain. It's easy to stay up until the earliest hours of the morning because we get too distracted by the whole panoply that's out there.

At the same time, most of us also don't want to give them up completely. That's where a list of memes such as this one can prove to be useful. It gives a measured dose of entertainment that doesn't have to go on forever. Unless, of course, you choose to scroll down to whatever is below this. At the end of the day, that decision is up to you and not anybody else.

29-Year-Old Man Brags About 'Training' His 19-Year-Old Girlfriend Into 'The Perfect Woman For Him'

Age gap relationships are among my favorite and least favorite pieces of internet discourse. If I'm being honest, I have been a valiant defender of some age-gap relationships on Memebase. I don't like when slight age gaps are blamed for other obvious issues in relationships, and I especially don't like it when people infantilize perfectly capable young women and act like they are too naive and stupid to date someone a couple of years older than them.

This, however, is not a time when I'm going to defend an age-gap relationship. A video of an age-gap couple recently went viral on Twitter, and it is an all-too-common example of an older guy taking advantage of a young woman. Although she's a legal adult, she's got "teen" in her age, and no 29-year-old should be in a relationship with a teenager. What's far worse than the 10-year age gap is that he brags about shaping her into the woman he wants her to be. Talk about a pig!

You never know where your next list of hot, fresh memes will come from. You might need to ration the memes you have just in case the government has a meme shortage. I don't think we'll get to a place where you need to pay a quarter just to get a listicle of memes delivered to your brain, but if we do, we need to stock up on as many free memes as possible. Even more grim, you never know when a list of memes will be your last, so it's important to enjoy them while you're still on this gorgeous green earth. I don't think anything wild will happen between now and the time we post the next list of funny random memes to Memebase, but you really never know. A Gang of Memes Ready for a Night on the Town

Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed or stressed out for no particular reason other than just being alive, I turn to the trashiest escapist entertainment, like reality television, celebrity gossip, and of course&memes. I'm not proud of this. In fact, I'm quite ashamed. But at least I'm willing to admit it. I wish I was one of those people who has the impossible capacity to use every inch of their time as efficiently as possible. I wish platitudes like 'live life to the fullest' inspired me to do anything, anything productive with my free time. But alas, I'm weak. And I'm addicted to trashy entertainment.

If you, too, experience a similarly shameful day-to-day existence, I wish I had an answer for you, I really do. The only thing I have to offer is some of the dumbest random memes you'll ever see. They might destroy your last two braincells, but at least you'll forget about all your problems for a minute or two.

The Most Entertaining Takes From TikTok This Week (October 17, 2023)

The rise of the content creator in my lifetime has been a phenomenon both impressive and terrifying. I remember the days when spending all your time on social media was considered to be living in your mom's basement behavior, instead of legitimate career choice. When a significant proportion of the working population didn't even know what an influencer was, and people who documented their life on the internet were considered odd.

Were things better back then? It's easy to reminisce with rose tinted glasses, but it can certainly be said that there were upsides to these pre-Content times. By the same token, a place like TikTok makes it difficult to imagine things being any different than they are today. Seeing as we're all glued to our screens anyway, we may as well take in the grand variety of human experience via the messy entertainment of the clock app. It can be pretty funny.

'People legit thought computers would end us': Older generations weigh in on what today's youngsters

It's pretty common to make assumptions about a generation you didn't experience firsthand, especially when you've seen it portrayed in movies and on TV. What does Gen Z really know about the 80s? What does Gen X know about the 50s? Even though we might hear stories from our relatives or watch some retro flicks, our minds tend to gravitate toward what Hollywood has shown us.

Well, some wise old folks on Reddit decided to set the record straight. They hopped on a thread that asked, "What do young people get completely wrong about past decades?" And their responses are pretty eye-opening. From their thoughts on old-school music to smoking being a social norm, and even the whole living wage debate, these Redditors are dropping some wisdom about the past that today's youngsters just flat out don't get.

So, was life better back then? Or is it better now? Well, that's a never-ending debate, my friend. No matter which generation you belong to, you'll definitely gain some insights by diving into this thread below.

20+ Hilarious Sci-Fi Memes to Fill Your Nerdy Needs (October 16, 2023)

Welcome back, geeks. It's time for another roundup of some of our favorite science fiction memes full of nerdy references to some of the best sci-fi movies ever made. Speaking of which, when was the last time you re-watched The Matrix?  That movie was released in 1999 and yet it still holds up amazingly well. I watched The Matrix over the weekend and even though I've literally seen it hundreds of times and despite all of its iconic 90s tropes, the movie still felt fresh and ahead of its time. Watching The Matrix also made me realize that we should totally bring back PVC clothing and tiny micro-sunglasses. Sometimes it feels like we as a society have brought about all the worst qualities of a techno-dystopia without any of the cool cyberpunk aesthetics, and I think that needs to change.

Anyway, if you're an unabashed fan of the science fiction genre, you're going to love this week's otherworldly collection of dank sci-fi memes. Enjoy.
