Edwart does what Nintendon't. http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/990210.html The Harvard Lampoon Skewers Twilight, Sega - KotakuIn the movie, Edward rescues Bella from potential rapists after she leaves a bookstore. In [Nightlight], she leaves a video game store without the controller she purchased, prompting a grizzled old man to follow her into a dark alley, trying to give her the item purchased. In the nick of time, Edwart leaps from a rooftop to scare the old man away.
"Are you okay?" he asked. "Yeah - why wouldn't I be okay?" "Are you serious, Belle? Were you not aware of what that sick old man was trying to do?" He shook his head, seething. "You're lucky I was on the roof all day. That old man . . .he was trying to sell you a Sega product." "What were you doing waiting for me on a roof all day?" I asked, watching his knuckles whiten at his own reference to Sega. | | Monday, January 4th, 2010 | | 8:40 pm |
The first round of Saying Yes! starts now! http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/990060.html Hi there! I mentioned Saying Yes! a while back on this community, and I got a pretty good response then (and some thoughtful feedback on the challenge itself), so I thought I'd mention that the challenge is now live, and will be running until about 11:59 EST on January 18th! In brief: Saying Yes! is a low-pressure sex-positive art- and ficbitathon. ("Bit" in this case means we're not really expecting fics that are longer than an LJ comment or so -- or whatever the visual equivalent of that is -- though longer/more detailed works are cool if participants want to do them.) It's a challenge designed to showcase characters who like sex, enjoy sex, and want sex -- characters fully capable of giving informed consent, and giving it enthusiastically. It's about characters who don't view sex or any of its aspects as something demeaning or shameful and don't pass similar value judgments on their partners' choices. There are a lot of stories out there, both fanfic and published, where characters enjoy sex despite themselves, and where a character who takes on a certain role or performs certain behaviors during sex is thought of as weaker or lesser. Sex and sex roles become imposed rather than sought out, and desire is passive, the result of things done to a character rather than things a character actively seeks out and wants. In contrast, stories and art for Saying Yes! show how being the submissive or bottoming partner during sex is FUN and not demeaning -- and that bottoming and submission are far from the same thing. In these creative works, characters shout "Yes!" instead of "No!," and characters can get up to all kinds of kinky crazy fun without ever being made to feel shamed for their desires. Here's the challenge post itself, here are FAQ/guidelines, and here's how the format works. You're more than welcome to leave prompts and comment on fills even if writing or drawing about sex isn't your thing, and I hope you'll consider doing so. We've got a lot of great prompts so far -- now we just need people to play with them! | | 6:41 am |
where the good pastiches at? http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/989857.html I saw and enjoyed Guy Ritchie's version of Sherlock Holmes, which prompted me to read the original stories for the umpteenth time. I've almost finished the Case Book and yet I'm still jonesing for more good written Holmesiana, so can anyone make any recommendations? | | Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 | | 12:39 pm |
Neil Patrick Harris vs. John Barrowman Battle Royale http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/989518.html Apparently, elsewhere on the internet, Neil Patrick Harris and John Barrowman are fighting for the title of Gay/Bisexual Man of the Decade. AfterElton covers the dispute (and has sponsored the poll) here. In the interest of full disclosure, I voted George Takei. | | Saturday, January 2nd, 2010 | | 6:12 am |

Baby-sitters Club to get prequel and updated re-releases http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/988790.html Scholastic is releasing a Baby-Sitters Club prequel and updated versions of the old books to hook a generation of girls who can't relate to perms or the joy of getting your own phone line. To quote Claudia, oh my Lord!In April Scholastic will release repackaged and revised editions of the first two books in the series along with The Summer Before, a new prequel written by Ann M. Martin, the New York Times reports.
...Ann M. Martin, who wrote the first 60 books in the 213 book series, says that she proposed writing a prequel about the summer that precedes Kristy's Great Idea:
"I have had many suggestions from fans over the years for reunion books that take place far in the future," Ms. Martin said. "I was more interested in exploring the characters and what led them up to the beginning of the series."
Scholastic wasn't confident that girls today would latch onto books in which the girls receive anonymous letters written on a typewriter and Claudia recommends Dawn wear "a white tank top under lavender overalls, lavender push-down socks, lavender high-top sneakers, and a beaded Indian belt" (or any other totally outrageous fashions dissected on the blog What Claudia Wore.)
Therefore, editors at Scholastic updated some of the references to technology and outdated fashions in the reissued books. So a "cassette player" has become "headphones" and a "perm" has become "an expensive hairstyle."I... yeah. I got nothing. Other than, "Oh, my Lord!" Edit: As pointed out by </a></b></a> moriath in the comments, Scholastic is also re-releasing Animorphs later this year or in 2011. | | Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 | | 11:52 pm |
fandom_lounge @ 2009-12-30T03:49:00 http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/988655.html It occurred to me that not everyone would know that this existed, and I thought it would appeal to folk. This year, the BBC - being the good, kind organisation that it is - has decided to bring us a Very David Tennant Christmas. He's appeared in *deep breath* QI, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Doctor Who, Hamlet (with Patrick Stewart, and I thoroughly recommend you try to watch this because it's fucking awesome), Alan Carr's Chatty Man, The Graham Norton Show, Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, the BBC Christmas ads, and... Nan's Christmas Carol, a mickey-take of A Christmas Carol, written by and starring Catherine Tate as a spin-off from her sketch show. He plays the most fabulous, utterly Scottish Ghost of Christmas Present that you ever did see, and I admit to having fallen somewhat in love. David's in Part 3, starting from about 3 minutes in, and pops up again for the finale. Seriously worth a look, if only for David Tennant prancing around in eye-liner and having the time of his life. I think he just earned my license fee all on his own. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
NSFW for swearing, don't say I didn't warn you.Helpful ETA: There is an LJ comm which allows you to find downloads of most, if not all, of these shows. However, I am not allowed to talk about it on unlocked posts. If you want details, provide me with your emails and I'll point you in the right direction. | | 2:07 pm |
Looking for an Article http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/988166.html A while back (possibly several years ago, because I'm pretty sure I read it before RaceFail and I just recently realized that started in January), I read someone's nice livejournal post about how to plan how much time you need to work on an exchange deadline with a challenge like Yuletide. There was some other good stuff involved - it was basically about how to figure out if you were overextending yourself and making sure you knew your own boundaries and deciding if you were being reasonable if you were signing up for an exchange. Well, I've recently needed to staple it to certain people's foreheads, but I can't find it for the life of me. I know my description there is horribly vague, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about, I'd be grateful for a link. | | 9:28 am |
Auto-Guesser! http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/988097.html This is going around my flist-- have you seen the magic genie who guesses characters yet? Think of a character or a real person, and answer the questions. It's possible to stump it-- you can go three rounds before it gives up-- but some of the ones it gets right (with the small amount of information you give it) are downright uncanny. My husband and I tried to stump it all morning, and I'm astonished at what it got, including Joe the Plumber, David Miscavige, and Exar Kun from Star Wars. It's also extremely hard to stump it with anyone from Warcraft, although it doesn't know some of the vanilla bosses. It got Ony and Kel'thuzad, but not Mandokir the Bloodlord. Warning: Almost as addictive as TV Tropes. | | Saturday, December 26th, 2009 | | 9:35 am |
Con survival. http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/987831.html Hello, loungers! Next summer, I'm going to my first anime con (Anime Evolution, in Vancouver). Although this is small as cons go, I'm kind of not a crowd person, so I'm about as nervous as I am excited. Does anyone know of any con survival guides or anything of the sort on the web? Or alternately, could any con veterans give me some tips on how to stay sane during the madness? I'll be there with two (hopefully three) people, and I'll be staying with my sister and her husband rather than at a hotel, so that'll give me a good home base from which to recover. I guess I'm just trying to avoid any nasty shocks by asking what these kinds of things entail. If anyone's been to this particular con, tips would be especially welcome! How's the layout, how big is the space, how much walking will I be doing (I've got chronic pain issues and will likely be in bad shoes because of my costume, so I have to pace myself), how many areas are there for sitting/refreshment/etc. But if not, general tips are still appreciated! (Don't worry, I'll be bathing every day ;D That's the one thing I always hear - WASH YOURSELF!) Thank you so much, you guys! I would've been lost without some of these tips. I appreciate it so much. |
