    What I'm Reading Wednesday, 10/4/2017
Two weeks in a row! Look at me go! I managed to function like a human being for like the entire day today, it was sort of amazing. So now I will continue my impressive accomplishments by making a blog post.

Books: I'm five or six chapters into The Soldier's Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian, and after the first three chapters I stopped and bought the next two books in the series on Amazon, so, yes, am enjoying! And juuust stuck a bookmark in Matt Ruff's Lovecraft Country to start reading next. (I usually have one ebook and one physical book on the go at a given time, and I'm trying to remember to read some of the unread books I actually own in between taking out all sorts of things from the library. We'll see how that goes when I'm using the quiet study room at the library five days a week to get writing and other work done.)

    Books finished:

Hello Forever by Sarina Bowen, a loosely connected ~sequel~ to Goodbye Paradise. Both of these m/m romances where one or both heroes have faced severe homophobia were originally published under a different name, and have been republished this year as Sarina Bowen titles. AND THEY ARE GREAT. If you are into that kind of angst, which. I am. As it turns out. I loved the way this one handled Cax's resistance to being with a guy, giving him a situation that he feels trapped by for utterly legitimate reasons, and the way his resistance gives way piece by piece (and then, as they say, all at once). <3

The Proposal by Mary Balogh, the first book of the Survivors' Club series, in which it becomes clear that this series is actually a spinoff of at least two OTHER series so now I need a family tree with all of Mary Balogh's books clearly indicated on it to figure out what ELSE I want to read because these are delightful. (Notwithstanding the occasional startling anachronism, like a heroine comparing something from which nothing escapes to a black hole. In 1819 or so. BUT WHATEVER, RECOVERY LOVE STORIES FOR EVERYONE.)

Fic: Today was another day featuring the blessing of a WIP update, this time from Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail which is of course The Best. The Olds!! <3______<3 (also the endnotes say there was a huge continuity error in this chapter but I'm reading at the same pace as chapters are posting so I have totally lost track of continuity anyway so it was just delightful.) Otherwise I have six tabs open, 155 things marked for later, and 34 marked to reread. Oh and now that I have a physical copy I am slowly making my way through Not Without You, which is staggeringly beautiful and A Delight. <3 <3 <3

    Fic finished:
(A sampling of stuff Ive bookmarked recentlyyou can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

I Do (please say you want me) by [tumblr.com profile] ceeainthereforthat (Bucky/Steve, E, 82k) - Bucky is a professional dominant, and Steve is the son of a vice president who grew up in the public eye; they meet running together in the same DC neighborhood, and just when they're starting to actually get involved, Bucky's professional life becomes front page news. Steve proceeds to Be Maximum Steve Rogers about it and refuses to cut off contact or throw Bucky under the bus--and for the sake of PR it's decided that Steve should play out a whirlwind romance with Bucky instead, getting married (with a pre-nup guaranteeing Bucky millions of dollars upon their scheduled divorce five years later). EXCEPT GUESS WHAT THEY FALL IN FABULOUSLY KINKY LOVE. Ughhh this was so great, and I adored the pace of reveals and the way they kept edging further and further into actual intimacy. <3 <3 <3

Just Spit It Out by [tumblr.com profile] PorcupineGirl (Bitty/Jack, G, 2k) - What happens when you live in a first-words soulmark universe and you hear your soulmate say the words on your wrist--and then realize that YOU now need to say the words HE'S been waiting for for his entire life. And you are, say, a deeply anxious Canadian hockey robot. IT MIGHT BE DIFFICULT. But hooray for fate (and Shitty). <3

All I Ever Wanted by [tumblr.com profile] sevenfists (Sid/Geno, E, 10k) - A really lovely story about two dudes finally being ready to be in love with each other. And doing some high altitude training during their bye week, because Sidney Crosby.

    What I'm Reading Wednesday, 9/27/17
...Okay so this also went by the wayside for the last month or so, but otoh I spent a lot of that time not reading much other than, you know, Stardew Valley. So. Let’s catch up!

Books: I’m currently in the middle of reading Snowed In, a m/m romance anthology from Torquere Press, which, uh, folded last year, so the anthology is no longer available. Oops. And I am also three-quarters of the way through The Proposal by Mary Balogh, Book 1 of the Survivors Club series, about which more below.

Books Finished: The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness This was delightful (and also A+ book cover design - it glows in the dark, which I was not expecting, so reading a chunk of it at bedtime and then shutting off the light to discover the book on my nightstand GLOWING WITH AN UNCANNY LIGHT was a truly beautiful moment). It’s a story about being one of the teens not involved in the paranormal drama going down at your high school - and it’s also a really fascinating portrayal of anxiety/OCD (in the narrator) and a variety of other challenging mental health issues in his family members, and the awkward process of breaking away from your family and growing up and figuring yourself out when you think you’re the least wanted, least interesting, least important person in any given group.

Only a Promise by Mary Balogh (Survivors Club #5) I found this one while randomly browsing the romance shelves at my new public library (getting a library card was, obviously, one of the first things I did after arriving) which is why I read it out of order; it’s the kind of series where that doesn’t matter too much.

The eponymous survivors are a group of men variously traumatized by the Napoleonic Wars, plus one woman also traumatized by being captured along wiht her husband and seeing him tortured and killed. The books are all set years after the survivors met each other at the estate of a sympathetic duke in Cornwall; now they have all recovered, more or less, and embarked upon the process of getting back to their lives. Only a Promise concerns Ralph, who has a facial scar and a heaping helping of survivor’s guilt as the only one of his school friends to come back alive. He also has a ducal title to pass on, so he winds up in a marriage of convenience with Chloe, who has suffered a series of disgraces since her debut in Society (and then, YOU WILL NEVER GUESS!!! they FALL IN LOVE EVEN THOUGH THEY TOTALLY SAID THEY WOULDN’T!!!!)

Fic: I’ve got 13 WIPs bookmarked, so I’m following at least that many--If They Haven’t Learned Your Name (!!!!!) updated last night (!!!!!) and Whip Crack updated today, so it is a good time for WIPs right now!

Fic finished: (A sampling of stuff I’ve bookmarked recently--you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

swallows still sing by @icoulddothisallday (Bucky & Steve pre-slash, M, 48k) - Bucky is a German Jew experimented on by Zola at Dachau, and when the Howling Commandos liberate the camp they take special responsibility for Zola’s prisoners. The story is gorgeous and thoughtful and more hopeful than not, but also is an absolutely gutting look at the unspeakable loss and dehumanization suffered by victims of the Holocaust; I managed to hold it together for the early parts and then cried all the way through the last three chapters, but, you know, consider your tolerance for this storyline. (Also it looks like the author is planning on a sequel? *hopeful look*)

    ~WILD SHIFT IN TONE~

Dudeliet and His Bromeo by @hugealienpie (Derek/Stiles & Bitty/Jack, T, 31k) - Stiles plays lacrosse and Bitty plays hockey and both of them think the feud between their teams is a bit silly, so they circumvent it. Also, you know how I wrote a story about Jack having a back tattoo because my feelings about him and my feelings about Derek Hale are like right next to each other? IMAGINE INSTEAD THAT JACK AND DEREK GET TO BE FRIENDS. !!!!!! Also what if Shitty likes to be naked all the time because he is a werewolf? :D (Oh hey, it looks like THIS author is ALSO planning a sequel?? *hopeful look multiplies*)

This Is the Ghost Story by @taste-is-sweet (Bucky/Steve, T, 45k) - This is part 17 of a series but the first 16 stories are all pretty short and, uh, I have not actually read them yet, so I think you can read this one fine without them as long as you are prepared for the fact that Bucky knows Rodney McKay and Ancient Technology/alien macguffins are a fact of his life from more than just the usual Asgardian directions. THE POINT IS: Bucky gets amnesia, AGAIN, but since the Winter Soldier ALWAYS has amnesia he doesn’t think to tell anyone for a while. OHAI BUCKY-THINKS-STEVE-IS-THE-NICEST-HANDLER KINK, NICE TO SEE YOU. :D

    What I'm reading Wednesday, 8/16/17
Books: Currently in the middle of Abroad by Liz Jacobs, Who Is One Of Us, and about to start reading... one of the two books I still have checked out from the library about the Chicago River and what its deal is.

Books finished: I just finished rereading Persuasion and IT CONTINUES TO BE THE BEST OF THE TWO JANE AUSTEN NOVELS I HAVE EVER ACTUALLY READ.

To the surprise of no one, I did in fact mentally work out the AU where Bitty is Anne, and then [personal profile] staranise lured me into joining her contemplation of the AU where JACK is Anne and in conclusion I am definitely not writing any Persuasion AUs ever.

...Because I am totally onto "what if Jack hadn't gotten an NCAA waiver to play at Samwell after playing in the QMJHL" AUs now.

Ahem. Where was I. READING THINGS, RIGHT.

Fic: Still 15 WIPs bookmarked! [archiveofourown.org profile] maculategiraffe's Fallout 4 series updated today and IT IS GREAT AND MIGHT EAT YOUR LIFE!! I've managed to get my Marked for Later list on AO3 down to... 99! Although my "To reread" bookmark tag is up to 39.

    Fic finished:

(A sampling of stuff Ive bookmarked recently--you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

the black lake by alcibiades (Bucky/Steve, T, 9k) Ohhh boy I hadn't had my heart shredded by a recovering!Bucky story in a while, so this was. OH BUCKY HONEY. PLEASE KEEP GETTING BETTER.

In So Many Words by alocalband (Nursey/Dex, M, 17k) In which Nurse writes stories that... all... seem... to be... the same... story. And they're all about him and Dex even when they're NOT ABOUT HIM AND DEX. <3

Short Circuit by Chiyume (Bucky/Steve, E, 20k) Bucky's arm gets damaged and starts giving him an... unusual... variety of sensory feedback every time it's touched. Which would be a lot easier for him to explain to Steve if he and Steve weren't both firmly convinced that the other isn't interested in him like that. (I would love about a million more stories about Bucky's arm getting cross-wired like this, but this one was definitely A GREAT START. :D)

You Make Me Look Legitimate. by Lanna Michaels (Bitty/Jack, G, 3k) LANNA WROTE FIC FOR MEEEEE ABOUT BITTY GOING TO THE 2018 OLYMPICS AND IT IS ADORABLE AND GREAT!!! <3 <3 <3

    What I'm Reading Wednesday, 8/9/17
So I haven't done this in... six months, I think, but today has been a really good day! I did all the stuff I meant to do during my workday!! So now I'm gonna go for broke and also talk about reading stuff, WITNESS MEEE!!!

    Ahem.

Books: I just in the last five minutes finally decided to stop reading Firestorm at Peshtigo, which is great but also, you know, about a whole lot of people dying horribly, and go reread Persuasion in which, afaik, no one burns to death at all. Hopefully I can make it through that without actually plotting a Check, Please! Persuasion AU but that New Fandom Energy is strong so I'm not exactly holding my breath. I also just started reading Priest by Sierra Simone, which had been kicking around my Kindle TBR collection for a year or so. I was kinda dubious about it and then read the author's note re: being brought up Catholic and still having a lot of feelings about Catholicism and spirituality and was like OH MY GOD, YOU'RE ME, so. Chapter 1 was good! :D

Books finished: ...Okay not QUITE during the past week, but the last book I finished reading was His Missing Pieces by M. A. Innes. It's M/M ageplay romance, as in one of the heroes knows at the start of the book that what he's really looking for in a relationship is someone who won't be freaked out by him e.g. wearing a diaper during sex--and since he's a college student carrying a torch for his gay-but-presumed-vanilla best friend, this all seems pretty insurmountable. (SPOILER: NOT INSURMOUNTABLE AFTER ALL.)

I was kind of ???? at a few points--Bryan's MOM knowing about his super-duper-secret kink came the closest to convincing me to stop reading--but the author seems to know what she's doing here (the mom thing is a result of overly-helpful internet-monitoring software when Bryan was a young teen, as it turns out, and his mom doing her best to be accepting and supportive). This is book one of a three-book arc in which, I'm guessing, the boys figure out how exactly to conduct a kinky relationship or indeed any relationship, but the first book was a delightful start and I'm looking forward to the second.

Fic: I have 15 WIPs bookmarked, so technically I guess I am in the middle of reading... at least 15 things? I also have 108 stories Marked for Later at the AO3, plus 29 bookmarked with the To Reread tag.

    Fic finished:

(A sampling of stuff Ive bookmarked recently--you can see all my bookmarks at http://archiveofourown.org/users/dsudis/bookmarks)

Braced Myself by PorcupineGirl (Bitty/Jack, T). Ahhhhhh delicious extra-canonical angst!! Jack's anxiety being CORRECT and Jack RUSHING TO GEORGIA to see Bitty after a horrible Christmas Eve car accident, complete with beside vigil + coming out to Bitty's parents. SO DELICIOUS AND LOVELY AND GOOD YES I WOULD LIKE TEN MORE PLEASE. :D

Tony Stark and the Mysterious Marksman by Sineala (Tony/Bucky, T). Ohhh boy. Noir!Tony meets Comics-verse hot-pants wearing (nineteen-year-old SAS-trained sharpshooter) Bucky, and secret-identity hijinks and competence porn ensue. :D :D :D Plus it was written for CapRBB, so there's lovely fanart!! :D

Anywhere on This Road by Sineala (Marcus/Esca, E) Hi, it is possible I am reading, like, all of Sineala's fic this summer, and relatedly having a The Eagle renaissance?? <3__________<3 MARCUS AND ESCA ILU oh god this is so great. Esca! All suspicious and wary and angry!! Marcus! All big and Roman and trying to be kind and determinedly shameless about what he wants! ...So like basically canon but with the porn bits written out so you don't have to imagine them?? UGH, SO GREAT. (Oh man maybe I should reread Passion & Profession????)

New book!! Surrendered to the Sea is out now!
Ahahaha with all my other new releases in the past week, I almost forgot to announce this one!

Surrendered to the Sea is out now in ebook & paperback through Amazon!

When an omega werewolf cast himself into the sea, he never expected someone would be there to catch him...

Omega Devon Griffith feels like his life is already over; he's failed out of school and it's just a matter of time before his parents arrange a loveless mating for the good of the pack. He wants someone to love him for himself, but it seems like he's missed his chance. When he gives in to a dark impulse and slips into the sea, he thinks that one moment of surrender will be the end...

Sea god Lir has spent years living only in the present, forgetting his own troubled past and never worrying about the future. Then his father issues an ultimatum: Lir needs to prove he can care for someone else, or he'll be banished from the sea forever. Lir doesn't even know where to start, until a werewolf falls into his sea and nearly drowns. This is Lir's chance to show he can be responsible for a mortal. He may not know anything about werewolves, but how hard can it be?

When Devon's heat arrives, Lir quickly discovers that caring for him takes more than just food, water, and shelter... and Devon finally feels like he has a future worth looking forward to. Alone together on Lir's enchanted island with a baby on the way, their love quickly blooms. But Devon can't quite forget his life on land, no matter how hard Lir tries to keep him happy in their hideaway. Can Lir and Devon's love survive beyond their magical island, or will too much reality break the sea's spell?

Surrendered to the Sea is an m/m mpreg romance featuring a lost omega werewolf, a lonely sea god, and a happy ending hot enough to melt icebergs!
